Preservation of Manuscript with Tradition of Local Culture in KHP Widya Budaya Library of Keraton Yogyakarta, Indonesia

ABSTRACT

The manuscripts that used to hundreds of years mades risk to vulnerable to mold and other parasites. Therefore, it takes the efforts to preserve and keep the original manuscript. One of the libraries preserving while maintaining the local cultural traditions is KHP Widya Budaya Library of Keraton Yogyakarta. On process of preservation of the manuscript, Abdi Dalem Keraton performs a small ceremony to honor the authors and the contents in the manuscript. Because of the reasons, the researcher interested to know how the process of preservation of the manuscripts that still maintain the cultural tradition of the Keraton who conducted by Abdi Dalem in KHP Widya Budaya Library of Keraton Yogyakarta. The purpose of this research is to analyze how the activities of preservation of manuscripts with the tradition of local culture in the KHP Widya Budaya Library of Keraton Yogyakarta, and to determine the factors causing damage the manuscripts located in the KHP Widya Budaya Library of Keraton Yogyakarta. The research method used is qualitative method. Data collection techniques through the interview, observation, and documentation. Research results show that before implement the preservation, Abdi Dalem performed the rituals of caos dahar which aimed to ask permission to “the guard” who keep the manuscripts. They believe that when they perform the ritual before preservation, the preservation process will be running smoothly. To overcome the damage factor, KHP Widya Budaya Library of Keraton Yogyakarta conducting preservation activities who conducted by Abdi Dalem. Preservation of library materials concerning efforts that are preventive and curative. Preventif action such as digitalization, alphabet translation, camperization, stored at the special cupboard, set the air humadity. While currative action such as removal of acid content, fumigation and binding and patching.
